FOR THE LOVE OF GUT

They say all roads lead to Rome. And we say: everything starts in the gut. Here is why…

Listen to your gut. Go with your gut feeling. What does your gut tell ya?

All that proverbial gut talk… Sounds like maybe we should be paying attention! After all, they don’t call it your “second brain” for nothing. But it seems that, as far as our health goes, the colon is often the most forgotten, neglected and underestimated organ in our body! However, lately science has been closing in on the paramount importance of colon health, and the deeper we dig, the more incredible it all gets!

In (very!) simple terms, the colon is the sewage system of the body. So, just imagine what would happen, if your house sewage system not only got clogged BUT you also left it unattended for years to come. Without a doubt, it would ruin your life as well as those around you – probably irreversibly! Well, Dr. Normal Walker believes that “the very best of diets can be no better than the very worst if the sewage system of the colon is clogged with a collection of waste and corruption. When too much fermentation and putrefaction is generated in the colon as a result of neglect, the pathogenic (disease forming) bacteria proliferate and ailments result.” By ailments, he doesn’t mean headaches and tiredness – he means Western chronic diseases: cancer, Alzheimers, diabetes, heart disease, depression, ADHD, high blood pressure, Crohn’s disease and strokes. And that’s already on top of skin problems, sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, joint and muscle pain, hormonal imbalances, weight gain, low libido and a myriad of allergies. Enough said.

Digestion is a highly complex affair, aided by a huge army of enzymes, acids, friendly bacteria and peptides. If anything is even slightly awry or the balance is off in some way, no amount of organic food or supplements will keep you healthy. Food intolerance, for one, is a classic cause of digestive issues that mostly have to do with the gut flora – those essential ‘friendly’ bugs that live in your intestines. Your usual bowel irritants are wheat, cow’s milk and all dairy, sugar, yeast, beef, pork, corn, coffee and oranges, but it could be something more serious like parasites or a leaky gut – either way, it’s best not to ignore any digestive problems.

It is estimated that 70% of a person’s immune system resides in the wall of the colon. This immune organ is intimately tied to the type of bacteria within it which is another reason why our diet has direct impact on our health. Certain cells in the lining of the gut spend their lives excreting massive quantities of antibodies into the gut.

So what can we do to look after all that precious plumbing? The first step is to cleanse and detox your colon and liver. You can start by purchasing a home enema kit for regular use or getting a professional colonic. Take it easy on your liver – it plays a central role in all metabolic processes of the body and it’s working tirelessly to break down the food for energy, so avoid anything unnecessarily taxing: alcohol, sugar, processed food, artificial sweeteners, saturated fats, synthetic supplements and unnecessary medication (especially overuse of antibiotics which also harm the gut flora).

Fibre! Fibre! Fibre! It acts as little scrub brushes and aids colon health by helping to keep you regular and prevent constipation. The best way to add fibre to your diet is to load up on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. As mentioned earlier, try limit your meat consumption to a minimum – think of it as a side dish portion rather than the centre piece of your plate – and take great care not to burn your food, as meats create carcinogenic substances which have been linked to colon cancer.

Well, that just about covers it – your colon TLC in a gut-shell. For more information, and life-changing results, check out Dr. Norman Walker’s book “Colon Health” – MYHRU tried and tested.
